Mixing Patterns for a Unique Look

Creating the atmosphere and energy you want in a room can present a challenge, whether you’re going for soft and relaxing, adventurous and outdoorsy or fun and spirited. One way to create a unique look is to mix patterns. It might go against instinct to combine patterns that are completely different from each other, but the result can be an interesting, inviting look in whatever theme you love. This article from Better Homes and Gardens has some tips for mixing patterns. Here’s what they recommend:

  • Use a variance in the size of the patterns, choosing both small and big prints and patterns to make the contrast pleasing to the eye. You could combine a large floral tapestry or print, for example, with a smaller floral design on your table linens to create an interesting look with flowers.
  • Choose colors that complement each other and be consistent with your color palette. Differing patterns will appear coordinated and fun if they’re in the same color families.
  • Vary the types of patterns used. You don’t have to stick to just florals or just plaids; you can combine plaid with toile or stripes with polka dots. A variance will create a fun, whimsical look.
  • Give the eyes a break. Make sure to include a few décor items in a pale neutral color to give your guests’ eyes a rest from following the patterns in your room.

For rustic rooms, you could combine multiple pinecone designs with plaids and solids to set them off, or for a country look, consider combining contrasting plaids with wall decor featuring landscapes and other scenes from country life, all in a similar color palette. Your own creativity will make whatever home décor element you start with—whether it’s the wall art, window treatments or rugs and flooring—look amazing.
